Vineyards and Winery, March 2011

March 2011
February is over now. The weather is slowly changing and getting softened. Last 2 months have been very cold. At several nights the temperature was -15 °C and in daytime it rarely exceeded the 0 ° C.
Vineyard pruning is gradually beginning. This is an extremely important step of the vine growth because this is where the architecture is mingled with the vine. On that step, we
decide the distribution of vegetation (canes, clusters…) in space and we choose the number of buds to leave at the vine. The latter one is important because it is the main component of the yield. Thus; more or less it directly affects the quality of the wine. We must therefore take into account many parameters such as grape variety, age of the vineyard, the nature of its soil, the weather of the previous year, the weather in the region, the desired grape quality... So this month is a lot of time to spend in the vineyards to see the vines and their behaviors, to explain how to prune the vines to the vine growers. The upcoming season is Spring! In the winery, the wines will “wake up” from hibernation and the 2010 vintage will show a new face of its personality.
In the vineyards, it is time to get prepared for the 2011 vintage.
